Volunteer Day at Bedfont Lakes

Home    News    Site Map

The first volunteer day at Bedfont Lakes was held on Saturday 1st March. Ranger James Herd has sent us this report of how it went.

Well what a start! Bedfont Lakes Country Park saw the launch of its monthly volunteer group on March 1st and what a day we had. Originally, the day was scheduled to run from 10am-3pm, but such was the enthusiasm of all to finish what we had started that we ended up running on until 4pm.

The aim of the day was to construct a new tern raft and refurbish two older ones, ready for the Common Terns that arrive at the park to nest in April. By recycling materials that we already had we were able to do this without spending a single penny. We also managed to squeeze in a bit of channel clearance work too, such was the good turnout.

There were a total of 10 volunteers that attended from a variety of backgrounds and ages. Everyone said they thoroughly enjoyed the day and were very satisfied to see their hard work completed at the end. But it doesn't stop here, watching the terns raise their chicks on the rafts all summer means we can all enjoy the effort put in on the day for months to come.

May I take this opportunity to say a big thank you to all those that attended the day from all the rangers here at Bedfont. The next volunteer day is scheduled for April 12th, 10-3.30pm. Meet at the visitor centre just before 10am, bring your own lunch and a soft drink (it can be thirsty work) and bring clothes in preparation for spring British weather (in other words, anything!), particularly wellies if you have them. Tea and coffee is provided.
