Bedfont Lakes Country Park is looking for a regular volunteer group to work with the rangers and help out with projects around the park.

It’s a great opportunity to learn some practical conservation skills, find out more about the local wildlife and just get outside in the fresh air!

The park has been open since 1995 and has always had an onsite team to manage and conserve the area. James Herd, landscape ranger, says: "Bedfont Lakes is a great site to work on. It’s the jewel in Hounslow's crown. We always have plenty of work to do and it would brilliant to get a group from the local community to see what goes into managing a park and conservation area"

Starting from Saturday 1st March 2008, the rangers would like a group to come in once a month to work on a variety of projects, everything from bird hide building to path clearing. For first project volunteers will get the opportunity to make Tern rafts. Terns, are a migratory bird specie which look like smaller, graceful gulls, they like to nest on flat areas of shingle that sits close to the water and creating a large, flat floating rafts to sit in the middle of the lake gives them the perfect habitat.

Tern rafts have been used at the park for the last 5 years and have proved hugely successful. The rafts protect the newly hatched chicks from predators and, as a result, Bedfont Lakes has one of the highest nesting populations in the area.

The day will run from 10am – 3pm but don’t worry if you can make it for the whole day. We would welcome any volunteers who want to come along. Even if its just for half an hour. We will provide some refreshments but don’t forget to bring some lunch along and plenty to drink. Come dressed in old clothes you don’t mind getting torn or dirty, sturdy shoes or wellies and be prepared for the weather!
